Seven Steps to Healing-Step Six: Psalm 91: God's Umbrella of Protection

By Pastors Steve and Pattie Reeves
Founders, Covenant Home Care

Psalm 91: He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of  the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shall thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

Thou shall not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasted at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shall thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.

Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;  There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.  For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.  Thou shall tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shall thou trample under feet.

Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.  He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him, and show him my salvation.

Many years ago we attended a Kenneth Copeland Ministries Conference in Washington D.C. It was there that we grasped the teaching of the power and protection in the 91st Psalm.

We returned home excited and ready to put into practice what we learned and see the miraculous results. Psalm 91 became our morning staple prayer. We prayed it over our children and grandchildren. We began using it as a prayer with our patients and often spoke to them of God's goodness. We also let our staff know of the power of the 91st Psalm.

There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all they ways...

Wow! It was like having your own body guard. God is there for everything: Illness, financial problems, marriage problems, etc., and all we are assigned to do is worship Him. This should not be only when troubles face us, but should be on a daily basis, giving thanks, praise and worship to Him. Speaking Psalm 91 is great for starters.

Several months after attending the KCM conference, Steve complained of chest pains. Being a nurse, I began to question him of the intensity, how was it radiating and if he was short of breath. After our prayers, he still felt the pains and he looked in distress. I didn't want to do a self-diagnosis, so we went to the doctor's office. The first doctor referred him to another doctor and then one test after another and the paid did not leave. Finally, eight weeks later, we had had enough! The pain was still there and fear and doubt was trying to capture us. We refused to doubt and began speaking by faith that he was already healed. The last doctor gave us yet another diagnosis. It was then that we took hold of our faith and began to activate what we learned at the KCM conference–speak Psalm 91 aloud.

I will say of the Lord, he is my refuge and my fortress; my God in him will I trust...

We put our complete trust in God. One day, in my spirit the Holy Spirit spoke: "It's not his heart." Unbeknownst to me, my husband would get the prescriptions filled and would not take the medication. After months of testing, all the test results came back negative for cardiac problems. The first doctor finally concluded with a laugh: "It's gastric reflux and how is it that none of my colleagues ruled it out before running a slew of cardiac tests?" After a slight adjustment in his diet and sweet tooth, (no more gummy bears) he has been free of chest pain. To God be the Glory!

A thousand shall fall at thy side and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee...

Now when illness or a test comes our way, because we know we abide under the shadow of the Almighty, we began to speak the 91st Psalm first! We put our complete faith and trust in God and He directs us in all truths.

God empowered physicians with the knowledge to treat the bodies He created, and hospitals are available for your diagnosis and healing. Ultimately, God gets the glory. Your prayer should be for God to direct the doctors' judgment as they examine you, and their hands as they operate on you, and their minds as they prescribe medication for you.

Many times, medication isn't needed, just a change in diet, along with exercise and rest. Also, stop worrying about those things that you cannot change. Water has been a miracle solution and we should drink more of it because it helps keep our bodies cleansed and aids in the elimination process. This is essential to avoiding many illnesses and cancer.

When you have tried everything, when you are sick and tired of being sick and tired, place your faith in God and receive your healing.

When in doubt, speak it out! Psalm 91: God's Umbrella of Protection
